Today marks the 25th anniversary of The King Legacy of Service.

In celebration The Corporation for National and Community Service  released a 25th Anniversary video that tells the story of how the MLK federal holiday has evolved into a national day of service that brings Americans together to solve community problems. Civil rights pioneer Ruby Bridges articulates Dr. King’s impact and her own personal experience in a very powerful and thoughtful way.

If you want to be inspired to serve all year long the Corporation for National and Community Service is launching the MLK 25 Challenge:  – a call to all Americans to honor Dr. King by pledging to take at least 25 actions during 2011 to make a difference for others and strengthen our communities.  Sign up here.

Be Haiti’s 365 Voice

January 12, 2011  |  Donation, Giving, Haiti, Philanthropy  |  View Comments

One year after the earthquake, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is challenging supporters to do more than remember.  Today in Haiti, a whole generation of children is poised to see their country transformed, their lives given hope. To move from surviving to thriving, these young people need to be listened to, responded to and accounted for.

Go to UNICEFHaiti365.org  and to commit to a 365-day presence. By pledging a monthly gift, you can help fund this new generation’s success. And if you do it today, your gift will be matched by the Irene S. Scully Family Foundation for the next 3 months.

YOU are the FUTURE of Philanthropy

January 11, 2011  |  Giving, Philanthropy, TED  |  View Comments

In June of 2010 I was able to attend a curated TEDx Conference in Houston. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. TED began in 1984 as a small conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since stumbling upon www.ted.com I have literally spent hours listening to some pretty powerful talks on countless topics.

So imagine my excitement when I learned that TEDx (a mini TED conference) was coming to Houston. I filled out my application for the curated audience, my application was accepted and I waited for the day to come.

In the interim, I needed some TED nourishment while I waited and I found this wonderful talk by Katherine Fulton. She spoke about the future of Philanthropy and about creating communities that embrace philanthropy and giving in every way. My exposure to Katherine Fulton and my TEDx Houston experience has inspired me to go a step further.

Philanthropy is more than giving your money, but its about giving of your time and your talent. That is what this blog hopes to be about. An exercise in going beyond self by encouraging the richness and the greatness of the collective as we intentionally decide to give more. As we define what MORE actually entails.

Our quest will question…

What community do you want to be apart of creating?

What collective are you apart of?

What does philanthropy mean to you?

I hope to piece it all together with THE NEW GIVING COLLECTIVE.

I hope you will join me.
